Around 25 per cent of homes in Britain may be encouraged to
fit solar heating panels under new measures to meet EU renewable energy
targets.
Proposals for 3,500 new wind turbines across the country are also
thought to be part of the government’s plans to achieve 15 per cent of energy
from renewables by 2020, reports the Guardian.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, energy minister Malcolm Wicks
hailed the measures “the most ambitious renewable energy strategy for Britain
that we have ever seen”.
Currently less than five per cent of UK energy comes from renewables,
but the newspaper claims a £100 billion drive could see off-shore wind power
generation alone increase 30 times in the next decade.
Households will also be made to cut down carbon emissions with
compulsory measures including the solar heating panels on rooftops.
